The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will not contest the upcoming Tamale Central parliamentary by-election following the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed, in the August 6 helicopter crash.
The party said its decision was driven by a desire to avoid deepening political divisions during a period of national mourning. It added that by stepping aside, it hopes to reduce the tension and acrimony often associated with by-elections in Ghana.
According to the NPP, the move is intended to honour Dr. Mohammed’s memory and support a peaceful process in selecting his successor.
The decision could pave way for a consensus candidate or an uncontested race in Tamale Central, potentially reshaping the constituency’s political landscape.
