Telecel Foundation Shows Care and Compassion to Female Inmates of Akuse Prisons

As part of this year’s Telecel CARE Month celebrations, Telecel Ghana Foundation has dedicated a day to support female inmates at the Akuse Local Prison (women wing) in the Eastern Region.

Through generous contributions from Telecel Ghana employees, the Foundation donated essential supplies including sanitary pads, soaps, toiletries, and disinfectants to support the personal care of the inmates.

The initiative, aimed at promoting wellbeing and inclusion, featured a free breast cancer screening exercise for all female inmates and some officers, conducted in partnership with medical professionals from the Ridge Medical Centre. The medical team also provided basic breast care education and wellness advice to raise awareness and encourage early detection of the illness.

Telecel Ghana’s General Manager of Commercial Operations, Mercy Dawn Akude together with members of the telco’s frontline team and the Foundation, made the donation to the inmates. She said, “As part of our CARE Month celebrations, we are reaching out to the female inmates, who are often overlooked to donate these essential items and provide free breast cancer screening as their health matters.”

Receiving the items, the Officer-in-charge of the Akuse Female Prison, ADP Beatrice Asiedu expressed her appreciation to Telecel Ghana Foundation and Ridge Medical Center for their generosity and support, commending the initiative for prioritising the welfare of inmates through the health screening and supplies. “This kind and thoughtful gesture means a lot to the inmates and officers. It makes us feel remembered, valued, and genuinely cared for.”

Established in the 1990s as a small extension of the Akuse Local Prison, the Akuse Female Prison was created to house women in custody separately, after logistical challenges made transfers difficult. Originally built to hold just five inmates, it now accommodates over twenty and runs a range of rehabilitation programmes including baking and sewing to help reform and reintegrate inmates into society.

Beyond this outreach, Telecel Ghana has been celebrating its customers and frontline team throughout October with a variety of rewards, appreciation events, community engagements, and digital education. The annual celebration, which extends the global Customer Service Week into a full month of activities, is under the worldwide theme, Mission: Possible.
