A confrontation between National Security operatives and residents of Manso Mpatasie in the Ashanti Region has left one person injured, intensifying tensions in Ghana’s ongoing fight against illegal mining.
The injured individual is currently receiving treatment at St. Martin Catholic Hospital in Agroyesum following a clash that erupted when security officials sought to impound excavators believed to have been used for illegal mining activities locally known as galamsey.
Eyewitnesses say the excavators were parked within private residences and not at active mining sites, prompting accusations from residents that the operation was both intrusive and unjustified.
Kwaku Bobie, speaking on behalf of the residents, criticized the move, calling it a breach of privacy and due process.
Assembly Member, George Acheampong echoed the sentiment warning that such actions could erode trust and sabotage efforts to regulate the small-scale mining sector.
Frustrated youth in the community appealed to the government to shift focus from punitive actions to sustainable employment.
They stressed the urgent need for job creation within the mining sector as a way to steer young people away from illegal ventures.
The incident reflects broader concerns about balancing environmental protection with economic survival in mining-dependent communities.
