This is not the time for football- GHALCA Vice, Alex Ackumey

The Vice-Chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Alex Ackumey, has kicked against the resumption of football and football related activities, saying there is no data which suggests that the coronavirus pandemic is over.

Alex Ackumey’s disapproval comes days after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) met with clubs and stakeholders to determine the future of the various leagues due to the pandemic.

According to reports majority of the clubs are calling for the league to be truncated as there is no clear sign as to when football will return.

The GFA is also racing against time to notify Confederation of Africa Football (CAF), on whether it will cancel the suspended season or continue with the season when health experts give the green light for football to resume in the future. The FA has until May 5, 2020 to let CAF know what decision it will take.

According to Alex Ackumey, football should not be considered at this particular point as the country is yet to be declared coronavirus free by health officials.

“For now it’s not safe for football to return. Football is a contact sport and it will go against the social distancing rules. Even supporters do come close. Comparing to European countries with big infrastructure they are also not playing football”, he said to Joe Debrah on Happy Weekend Sports on Happy FM 98.9FM.

“Even advise from health officials is also important. Football will always be there. So why the rush. We should even think about the economy and how clubs will survive after this. For now, we have to wait. Even with the Anas exposé we waited for 18 months which was man made”, he added.
