On this day 24 February 1963 (Exactly 57 years ago today)  Ghana beat Nigeria 5-0 in a Semi-Final match of Nkrumah Gold Cup played in Kumasi.

Goals Scored : Wilberforce Mfum (13,80) E. J. Aggrey -Fynn (60,P) Baba Yara (70) Edward Acquah (90)

On this 24 February 1999 (Exactly 21 years ago today) Ghana’s Black Satellites scored an impressive 5-0 win over Angola  in their second group A Africa U-20 Championship match played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Issah Abdul Rahman 29 (P) , Adu Tutu Skelley 51, Awuley Quaye 78, Theophilus Amuzu 83, Issah Mohammed 89

Ghana Line-up : Sammy Adjei,  George Blay, Hamza Mohammed, Kofi Amoako, Issah Abdul Rahman,  Abdul Razak / Theophilus Amuzu, Owusu Afriyie,  Laryea Kingston, Baffour Gyan/Issah Mohammed, Adu Tutu Skelley, Johnson Eklu / Awuley Quaye.

Angola Line-up : Mamona Joao Luis, Refato Baptista, Manuel Ferreira/Antonio Miranda, Comes Makuntima, Francisco Monteiro, Antonio Jose Da Silva, Mateus Andrea, Hermenegildo Joaquim, Morais Paulo, Agost Morais Sebastiao/Flavio Da Silva, Pedro Taveres Pereira.

On this day 24 February 197 (Exactly 46 years ago today) The Ghana Football League season started with the two most successful clubs, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak losing their opening matches. Kotoko lost to Cape Coast Mysterious Dwarfs through a Robert Koufie strike, Hearts lost to Bofoakwa Tano at Sunyani through  Dan Owusu’s overhead kick. 

On this day 24 February 2007 (Exactly 13 years ago today) Former World champion track and field athlete Marion Jones (31) wedded Olympic bronze medalist Obadele Thompson (30) at the Union Hill African Methodist Episcopal Church in Wilson’s Mills, North Carolina.

On this day 24 February 1993 (Exactly 27 years ago today)  England’s 1966 FIFA World Cup winning captain, Bobby Moore died at 6.36am at the age of 51.

He was the first member of the England World Cup winning side to die, the second being Alan Ball 14 years later. Moore was also outlived by the trainer of the side, Harold Shepherdson, who died in September 1995, and the manager of the side, Alf Ramsey, who died in April 1999.

 Ray Wilson died in May 2018, as did Gordon Banks in February 2019 and Martin Peters in December 2019.

Bobby Moore’s funeral was held on 2 March 1993 at Putney Vale crematorium and his ashes were buried in a plot at City of London Cemetery and Crematorium with his father, Robert Edward Moore (who died in 1978) and his mother, Doris Joyce Moore, who had died only the previous year.
