Andrew Agyapa Mercer, the Minister-designate for Tourism, has pledged to prioritize the completion of the National Cathedral project if confirmed for the role.

During his vetting before the appointment committee on March 5, 2024, Mr. Mercer emphasized the importance of completing the project, describing it as a national asset with significant potential for income generation and tourism.

The National Cathedral project, which has been facing financial challenges, has been a topic of debate in recent years. Mr. Mercer stated that he would seek a loan from Parliament to ensure the project’s completion, citing the need to uphold the country’s pride and attractiveness to visitors.

“I believe it will be a huge income generator for our country and will help in attracting visitors. If I have to present a budget for Parliament for consideration, yes,” Mr. Mercer declared.

He also addressed concerns regarding the project site being dubbed the “most expensive hole,” stressing the importance of completing the cathedral in good shape.

The National Cathedral project, initiated by the government, aims to provide a landmark place of worship for all religions in Ghana. However, funding challenges have stalled its progress, prompting calls for decisive action to ensure its completion.

His remarks come amidst a series of vetting sessions for ministerial appointments, with several other nominees slated to appear before the appointment committee, including Lydia Seyram Alhassan, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, Ophelia Mensah Hayford, and Darkoa Newman, who are nominees for various ministerial positions.
