Tricycle Ban not limited to ‘borla aboboyaa’ – Police clarifies

Commanding Officer of the Accra Central Motor Transport & Traffic Department (MTTD), DCOP Martin Ayiih, has explained that the ban on tricycles plying the Accra-Tema Motorway is not limited to those used for transporting waste.

He indicated that the ban is a total ban which prevents all tricycles regardless of purpose from plying the Motorway.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon Henry Quartey announced that the ban of motor tricycles popularly known as “aboboyaa” on the Accra-Tema motorway was to take effect from yesterday, November 1, 2021.

However, recent reports indicate that some waste collectors using the ‘aboboya’ are still plying the highway to dump waste at the Kpone landfill site.

In an interview on the Happy Morning Show hosted by Samuel Eshun, DCOP Martin Ayiih stated, “The ban does not only apply of aboboyaa carrying waste but every single aboboyaa using the motorway. Some aboboyaa’s carry sachet water, scrap metals etc. and we are banning all of them from plying the motorway because of the nuisance they cause, and their recklessness on the road.”

The MTTD Commander added, the speed of these tricycles which are mostly overloaded pose a danger to road users. “The motorway is a high speed stretch and these tricycles travelling at a slow pace inconveniences all road users. Dangerous driving is not only about over speeding but those driving at a slow rate can be a danger to all road users.”

The Police which is set to patrol the highway and enforce the ban from Wednesday, November 3, 2021 has pledged to arrest and impound anyone riding an aboboyaa on the highway.
