True Drivers Union celebrates Ofori Asiamah’s nomination for ministerial appointment

The True Drivers’ Union (TDU) has expressed its elation at the nomination of Kwaku Ofori Asiamah to serve as a Minister of Transport in the second term of President Akufo-Addo.

Public Relations Officer of the Union, Yaw Barimah speaking in an interview with Sefa Danquah on the ‘Epa Hoa Daben show shared that Kwaku Ofori Asiamah was deserving of an appointment as the Minister of Transport because of the many developments he had brought in the transport sector in President Akufo-Addo’s first term.

“We are grateful that the sector Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah will be going through the vetting process. We know he will be successful. While we were not pleased with all that he did, at least he did some one or two things that we were impressed about”, he said.

He added that the Union will, however, criticize the Minister-Designate when the need arises.

Yaw Barimah, however, noted that the praises heaped on the Minister-designate cannot be same for the former deputy Minister of Transport, Titus Glover.

According to him, Titus Glover’s dealings with the drivers were unfair and as such drivers would not rally their support behind him, if he were to be nominated for a ministerial role in the sector. “If Titus Glover was appointed under Nana Addo’s second term, we would have protested because he didn’t deal rightly with us”, he added.

Meanwhile, the True Drivers’ Union has advised the parliamentarians involved in the vetting process to only approve “people who are deserving of the roles”. Yaw Barimah recalled that under the first term of President Akufo-Addo, some undeserving ministers were cleared to become ministers only for them to bring reproach to the President’s name.

Last month, President Akufo-Addo submitted to Parliament for the approval, a list of names for appointment as Ministers in his new government.

This list included the names of some 46 persons expected to fill the ministerial positions and support the president to fulfil his mandate in the next four years.

On Wednesday, 10th February, 2021, Parliament’s Appointment Committee has begun the vetting of President Akufo-Addo’s ministerial nominees.

The Health Minister-designate, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu and National Security Minister-designate, Kan Dapaah were the first persons to be vetted.

The process is expected to span from February 10 and end on March 9.
