The Black Meteors failed to grab a ticket to next year’s Tokyo Olympic Games after losing on penalties to South Africa in the third place game.

Ghana has failed to qualify for the Olympic football tournament for the past 15 years  and will have to sit out of next year’s games to be held in the summer.

The Black Meteors came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw with South Africa’s Olympic team at the Cairo International Stadium on Friday.

Emmanuel Mensah and Samuel Obeng scored the two goals to send the game straight to the penalty-shootout.

The Black Meteors once again failed to win from the penalty shootout for the second time in this competition.

Emmanuel Cudjoe’s missed penalty handed the South Africans the ticket to Tokyo after Kingsley Fobi and Edward Sarpong had missed earlier spot kicks.

Ghana also lost on penalties to Cote d’Ivoire in the semi-finals on Wednesday 20 November, 2019.

Ghana’s quest to break the jinx and qualify for the Olympic football tournament has been extended to the 2024 Olympic Games.

Egypt, Cote d’Ivoire and South Africa will represent Africa at the Olympic Games next year.
