The United Kingdom has announced the introduction of a mandatory digital ID to validate the eligibility of every worker in the United Kingdom.
UK is currently experiencing multiple challenges related to immigration, including historically high net migration figures and continued illegal crossings of the English Channel. In response, the Labour government announced plans for a mandatory digital ID to curb illegal working, a policy that is facing significant opposition and raising civil liberties concerns
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer made this announcement during a speech held at the Global Progressive Action Conference in London.
“You will not be able to work in the United Kingdom if you do not have digital ID. It’s as simple as that.”
Sir Starmer explained that the digital ID would be free of charge for the right to work by the end of parliament in UK.
