The University of Ghana Stadium VIP Room was charged with sporting energy this morning, Febuary 3,2026 as the second edition of the University of Ghana Corporate Football League (UGCFL) was officially launched.

Building on the success of its inaugural season, the 2026 edition promises to be a massive upgrade in scale, strategy, and corporate engagement.

The event brought together heads of corporate institutions, media partners, and high-ranking university officials to witness the balloting and the arrival of the 2026 League Trophy.

Delivering the keynote address, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, highlighted the profound link between the boardroom and the football pitch. She noted that while the university is primarily a center for research, sports serve as an “essential complement” to education.

“When colleagues swap boardrooms for jerseys, they learn about collaboration and teamwork which they then take back to the boardroom,” Prof. Amfo stated. “This year’s league is about scaling impact. We have listened to feedback and strengthened partnerships with sponsors and media.”

The Vice Chancellor also shared a lighthearted moment with the audience, recalling a pre-event exchange with the Director of Sports. When asked if she would be playing, she quipped, “Don’t provoke me to performance.”

A major highlight for the 2026 season is the University of Ghana’s own tactical shift. After fielding five different teams in the first edition, the institution has decided to consolidate its talent.

“The first edition taught us strategy,” the Vice Chancellor explained. “That’s why we have moved from scattering our strengths to consolidating and presenting a single, unified University of Ghana team.”

The CEO of Rite Sports Services, Yaw Sakyi Afari, led the highly anticipated team balloting process. Defending champions Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) find themselves in a “Group of Death” scenario, facing off against heavyweights and hungry newcomers alike.

The 2026 trophy arrived with great fanfare, received by a delegation including a representaive from the office of the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, the Vice Chancellor, and the University Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah.

They formally declared the league launched, signaling the start of a season focused on employee wellness and the reduction of workplace stress through physical activity.

Dr. Austin Luguterah, Director of the University of Ghana Sports & Wellness Directorate, and George Lomotey of GBC (the official TV partners) both reaffirmed their commitment to making this edition a broadcast masterpiece, showcasing memorable goals and the competitive spirit of the Ghanaian corporate world.

The launch concluded with a message from the defending champions, GCAA, who warned the new entrants that they are not ready to part with their title just yet.
