The interim National Chairman of the United Party (UP), Abubakar Siddique Boniface, has dismissed claims that he overly benefited from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) before breaking away to join the Movement for Change .

Speaking on Epa Hoa Daben on Happy FM, hosted by Bismark Brown, Mr. Boniface acknowledged that his political visibility grew during his time with the NPP. However, he clarified that his success was built on personal effort, not party sponsorship.

“I was working in the UK and later at Mellen Bank in London before I was called to return home to contest as Member of Parliament for Salaga on the ticket of the NDC,” he explained. “At that time, there was an internal dispute within the NDC in Salaga, and I withdrew from the race to run as an independent candidate and I won.”

Mr. Boniface revealed that even former President Jerry John Rawlings supported his independent bid, a move that surprised many at the time.

He further stated that while the NPP gave him public exposure, he was already financially and socially established before joining the party.

“When you went to Salaga then, people said I already had everything a house, a wife, and cars. So yes, the NPP gave me mileage, but I didn’t join the party because I needed anything,” he added.

Mr. Boniface added that former President John Agyekum Kufuor could attest to the truth of his claims.
