Vice-Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to renaming the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) in honor of its founder, Nana Opoku Ampomah.

This assurance was made during a visit to the Chief of Amoafo, Nana Opoku Ampomah, as part of Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s tour of the Bekwai Constituency in the Ashanti Region.

On August 28, 2023, Joseph Kwaku Opoku-Ampomah, the founder of UPSA, celebrated his 95th birthday. Although the day was marked by festivities, the renaming of the university, a promise made five years ago, has yet to be fulfilled. Nana Opoku Ampomah, who also serves as the Paramount Chief of the Amoafo-Bekwai Traditional Area, is still waiting for this honor.

The commitment to rename UPSA was first announced by President Nana Akufo-Addo on April 25, 2018, during the university’s Fourth Special Congregation. At that event, Nana Opoku-Ampomah was awarded an honorary doctorate in recognition of his significant contributions to education in Ghana.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh assured that the constitutional and legal processes necessary to change the university’s name to “Opoku-Ampomah University of Professional Studies” are in motion. He further indicated that the government plans to divide the Amansie East district to promote development in the area.

Highlighting the government’s progress in infrastructure, power stability, healthcare, and job creation, Dr. Prempeh encouraged continued support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the Parliamentary Candidate, Ralph Poku-Adusei, in the upcoming elections.

He urged the people to actively campaign to ensure a decisive victory in December, promising a future of renewed hope and prosperity for Ghana.
