Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has addressed growing public concern over high mobile data consumption, clarifying that investigations have found no evidence of price manipulation by telecom companies.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Friday, the minister revealed that a dedicated operational task force had been set up at the National Communications Authority (NCA) in collaboration with mobile network operators (MNOs) to probe complaints that have flooded social media in recent weeks.

“I have seen a number of complaints on social media, and set up an operational task force at the NCA and all the MNOs to deal with these complaints”.

According to the minister, every complaint referred to the task force has been thoroughly investigated, and the findings point to user behaviour and device settings, not pricing irregularities, as the root cause of excessive data usage.

“To put on record, every single complaint that has been referred to the team has been investigated, and all of them have proven that it is user settings and user behaviours that have affected the use of their data. There has been no price tempering”.

Sam George stressed that while the ministry remains vigilant, regulatory action will only be taken based on verifiable evidence.

“I will not hesitate to deal decisively with any telco that alters the pricing that has been approved by the NCA. But unless there is evidence of the same, you cannot punish somebody just because people are making a claim that is not backed by evidence”.

The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to consumer protection, transparency, and accountability in the telecom sector.

“We will continue to deal with every single complaint that comes our way,” he assured.
