A widely circulated video on social media narrated the death of Eric Jackson; a Ghanaian national in China. The narrator insinuated that Eric Jackson lost his life medical professionals in China refused to attend to him because he was an African.

Happy FM’s Joseph Nii Ankrah followed this trending story and interviewed a Ghanaian who was present during Eric Jackson’s medical emergency through to his unfortunate death. The eye witness; Jordan, a Ghanaian student in Yantai China narrated to Nii Ankrah that upon realizing Eric Jackson needed immediate medical attention, he drove him in his personal car in search of medical centres.

However, they got to the right medical facility late and Eric Jackson was pronounced dead on arrival. When asked why the earlier medical centres refused to attend to Eric as purported in the trending video, Jordan explained that those centres were not designated hospitals for general medical service or emergency.

He explained that in their haste for medical help, they drove to any location that had the symbol of medicine on its building and it turned out that those locations were not designated medical centres for general medicine or emergency. In effect the trending videos claiming that Chinese health workers refused to attend to Eric are not true but they were refused because those centres did not have the capacity to provide general medical service.

The first stop was at a care home for the aged and after the refusal, the second stop was at a dental hospital. Their third stop was at a Chinese Traditional medical centre whose operators also refused to assist on the basis of not having the requisite skills for general medical emergency and therefore directed them to a proper medical facility. He explained that upon arriving at the proper medical facility, medical officers provided all the needed care but unfortunately, Eric had passed on before arrival.

When asked if Ghana’s Embassy in China had refused to assist them as claimed in the trending video, Jordan explained that they did not contact the Embassy and that the Embassy was not aware of the situation.
