Early morning rains on Tuesday morning in Accra resulted in floods across the city.

Floods were noticeably more disruptive at Kaneshie, resulting in slow traffic, delays for buses and difficulties crossing roads by foot.

Flooding was particularly bad at the junction between Graphic Road and Ring Road West, resulting in gridlock.

Vehicles that chose to persevere through these floodwaters were half-submerged as roads became fast-moving torrents.

Here, some chose to cling to the back of ‘trotros’ and lorries to traverse the floodwater.
Some passengers, on the other hand, chose to alight from their vehicles, fearing for their safety.

Traffic issues were compounded as the floods coincided with early morning traffic – those attempting to travel across the city for work had to confront additional difficulties.

Buses stopped leaving Kaneshie station – and some journeys were delayed for over two hours. Passengers travelling on some buses from Kaneshie to Takoradi were meant to leave at 8am, but they were delayed until 10am.
In these early hours, chaotic scenes were common.

Many chose to wade through floods, which were contaminated by unsanitary water from local sewers, while many others took refuge on pavements and nearby shops. Some shops and roadside properties were partially submerged as floodwaters drained away from main roads.

The floodwater quickly receded once it reached its peak.

The channels that allowed rains to collect so quickly also allowed the water to flow away into the sea.
