The Omanjor Homowo festival in the Greater Accra Region turned violent on Saturday, August 30, 2025, resulting in multiple injuries and reported deaths.
The clash occurred during a traditional kpoikpoi sprinkling ceremony when rival groups from Omanjor and Sowutuom faced off over a designated route dispute.
According to eyewitnesses, the conflict stems from a longstanding dispute between the two communities over land boundaries and ritual routes.
The situation escalated quickly, with reports of gunshots and stone-throwing. Multiple people were injured, including a police officer who was physically assaulted.
The police was overwhelmed, but reinforcement was called in to restore calm. Journalists at the scene were forced to hide, awaiting police backup. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
Local authorities attempted to mediate the situation by assigning specific routes for the Homowo activities. However, the efforts were unsuccessful, and the violence continued.
