The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed claims that soldiers are being used to monitor candidates at examination centres.
The clarification follows a viral video showing a soldier at one of the centres, which sparked concerns that military presence could intimidate candidates.
According to WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, the video was recorded at the Burma Camp examination centre, where some soldiers also serve as teachers. He explained that upon inquiry, it was confirmed that the soldier in the video was present in his capacity as a teacher, not as a security officer.
Mr. Kapi stressed that deploying soldiers to examination centres is not standard practice for WAEC. He therefore urged the public to disregard the misinformation suggesting that the soldier was sent to intimidate candidates.
