Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged his competitors in the flagbearership race to prioritize unity and redirect the energy used in trading insults and criticisms into holding the NDC government accountable.

Speaking to supporters at the NPP headquarters on Thursday, August 28, after submitting his nomination forms, Dr. Bawumia said his ultimate goal was to build a strong and united party capable of winning the 2028 general elections.

“What the NPP and Ghana need is a strong party that can hold the government accountable for these promises, Bawumia has always done this. For the various candidates contesting the flagbearership, ask won’t Ghana and NPP be better off if focusing your guns on Bawumia, you focus on holding the government accountable to show that you can lead the NPP by holding the NDC accountable,” he said.

He recalled that since joining the NPP in 2008, after leaving his position at the Bank of Ghana, and later resigning from the African Development Bank in 2012 to fully serve the party, he had remained committed to its growth.

He noted that he had consistently defended the party, including serving as a key witness during the 2013 Supreme Court case.

Dr. Bawumia stressed that if delegates give him the mandate to lead the NPP, he would dedicate himself to rebuilding the party and delivering victory for the party in 2028, provided he had the full support of the grassroots and the Minority caucus.

He further cautioned fellow aspirants and members against engaging in politics of insults, warning that such conduct could be exploited by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 elections.
