The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced a 48-hour disruption in water supply to Somanya and its environs, affecting residents who heavily rely on the Kpong Water Treatment Plant (WTP) for their water needs.

The temporary shutdown of the plant is necessary for the installation of a new interconnection pipeline and foot valves, aimed at enhancing water generation capacity.

Stanley Martey, Chief Manager in charge of PR and Communications at GWCL, assured residents that the company would adhere to the scheduled rehabilitation period.

“The program will start today but management has been there, including a team of engineers and myself. We were there the whole day to ascertain the preparations so far and to just look at how things will be and then tomorrow we start the work,” Martey stated, expressing confidence that the maintenance work could potentially be completed ahead of schedule.

However, the disruption in water supply exacerbates the already dire situation faced by residents of Tamale, who have been grappling with water scarcity for months. Some residents have resorted to scavenging for untreated water to meet their daily needs, highlighting the severity of the crisis.

Haruna Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for Tamale South, has urged the government to declare Tamale a water-scarce zone, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention to address the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
