Tamale is facing a dire water scarcity crisis, prompting urgent calls for government intervention from local lawmakers.

Haruna Idrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South Constituency, has sounded the alarm, urging immediate action to address the pressing needs of residents.

During a session in Parliament, Haruna Idrisu passionately appealed to government to declare Tamale a water scarce zone and to swiftly deploy relief water supplies to the area.

He highlighted the severe impact of the water shortage on the daily lives of Tamale residents, stressing that the situation has become increasingly desperate.

Mr. Idrisu referenced previous government assurances of financial support totaling €272,000,000 aimed at bolstering water infrastructure in the region. However, he emphasized that more immediate action is needed to alleviate the suffering of the people of Tamale.

Echoing Mr. Idrisu’s concerns, Alhassan Suyuhuni, Member of Parliament for Tamale North, underscored the gravity of the situation. He pointed out that the existing water sources in the area are insufficient to meet the growing demand, particularly as the city expands.

Mr. Suyuhuni lamented the ineffectiveness of borehole drilling efforts due to low water levels, exacerbating the crisis and posing significant health risks, especially for women and children.

He further highlighted the detrimental effects of water scarcity on various aspects of life in Tamale, including education and marriage, particularly within the Muslim community.
