The Public Relation Officer of the Central Regional Police, DSP Irene Oppong has said that the police is yet to invite the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Mavis Hawa Koomson for admitting that she fired gunshots at the Step to Christ polling station.

Reports indicate that there was mayhem at the centre as they were other gunshots and motorbikes were set ablaze. The police later intervened and arrested four people after the shooting. A gun was seized by the police.

Speaking on the incident, DSP Irene Oppong in an interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show made known that the police had received complaints from some people who were present at the polling station. While the police has been able to gather intelligence and made arrests, the police will have to go through due process to arrest the MP.

“As at the time we left the scene of the crime, we didn’t know who fired the gun and we had the suspect in custody ready to be questioned.

But we’ve heard Hawa Koomson say she fired the gun, and we are following the due process to call her and hear her part of the story. We got the pistol at the scene of the crime. We have leads that will help us get more suspects. We will have to work in the afternoon and get the investigation going which will help us in our work”, she stated.

She furthered that the police is yet to gather more information to help them in their investigations.

“Yesterday, we received the case docket came from Kasoa for investigation. We are moving to Kasoa from cape Coast to take more information to know which party these guys belong to or which party was responsible for the confrontations”.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Mavis Hawa Koomson has admitted to firing shots at a voter registration centre in her constituency on Monday (July 20, 2020) “to protect herself”.

Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have expressed their disappointment in the police for the delay in arresting the MP after she admitted to firing a gunshot.
