President John Dramani Mahama has commented on the progress of the Ghana cedi over the past year, citing major indicators including the strengthening of the cedi against the U.S. dollar.
Delivering a State of the Nation Address on the floor of Parliament, the President noted that “Ghana’s cedi appreciated by 40% against the United States Dollar and 30.9% against the British Pound. and by 24% against the Euro.”
“We did not arrest the dollar, we strengthened the cedi to put up a good fight against the other currencies.” the President stated.
Mahama further noted that the cedi’s performance has enhanced performance across all sectors of Ghana’s economy — including a historic crossing of the 100,000 billion mark within the first year of the Mahama-led administration.
As of January 2026, the cedi was trading at GH¢10.88 to the US dollar, GH¢14.77 to the British pound, and GH¢12.80 to the euro on the interbank market.
