The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Abbas Ibrahim Moro, has dismissed reports of a 20% increase in transport fares announced by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), saying the union is unaware of any such decision.
His reaction follows a statement from the GRTCC indicating that public transport fares will go up by 20%, effective Friday, August 8, 2025.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Happyghana.com, Abbas Ibrahim Moro expressed surprise at the announcement, stressing that GPRTU was not involved in any consultations leading to the purported fare increment.
“We’ve seen the statement online, but as I speak with you, GPRTU has not held any meeting or agreed on any transport fare increment,” he said.
He explained that fare adjustments are usually made through extensive consultation with all relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Transport.
According to him, GPRTU leadership is scheduled to meet with other transport operators on Wednesday, August 6, to deliberate on whether a fare adjustment is necessary.
“We will meet either today or tomorrow to discuss the matter and decide if transport fares should be increased. Until then, there is no confirmed fare increment,” he added.
