We’re not compiling an ECOWAS register; John Boadu tells West African neighbours

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has appealed to citizens of Ghana’s neighbouring countries to respect the democracy of Ghana and stay away from our subsequent voter registration exercises.

The NPP in a press conference monitored by Happy 98.9 FM, addressing issues on the attempts by some non-Ghanaians to get their names in the just ended voter registration exercise said, “We are not compiling an ECOWAS register but a Ghana register.”

The General Secretary of the party, John Boadu addressing the press stated that, “We love our African brothers and sisters and just as we cannot vote in their elections so do we expect them to respect us and stay away from our elections.

He noted that the aftermath of the voter registration exercise which ended last week established beyond a reasonable doubt that non-Ghanaians tried to get their names in the new voter register and to some extent, a few others succeeded to get their names in the register.

But with the vigilance of security forces and the officers of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), these foreigners were found out and arrested.

The General Secretary of the NPP said
“There are a number of Nigerians and Togolese who managed to get registered into the voter register but some have been arrested and prosecuted whilst some are awaiting sentencing at the Keta Circuit Court.”

John Boadu was quick to add that some Ghanaians who knowingly served as guarantors to these foreign nationals have also been arrested.

The nationwide Voters Registration exercise which started on June 30, was conducted in six phases in about 33,000 registration centres and ended
officially on Thursday, August 6.

However, a mop-up exercise was conducted on Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9, 2020.
