Asante Kotoko Legend, Joe Debrah has revealed that one of his low points during his playing career was when he joined Ivorian side African Sports in a big-money move.

Joe Debrah, a household name during the 1990s, left Asante Kotoko after receiving a good offer from the Ivorian club.

He had revealed that before he left to African Sports, there was a move to join English side Queens Park Rangers but that failed to materialize as his club were not willing to release him.

Speaking in an interview on Happy FM’s Where Are They Program, he said, “I had to leave Asante Kotoko to African Sports because I had a good offer from the president of the club. Before the move to African Sports, I went on trial to English side Queens Park Rangers but the Ghanaian club did not sanction the move. So when it collapsed I decided to join African Sports”.

“Unfortunately I sustained a serious meniscus injury and I was flown to France to undergo an operation. The Club President after, my injury, held my salary for 10 months. Money for my medical expenses was not forthcoming so I was stranded in Ivory Coast. I decided to leave the team and came back home in 1995 where I re-joined Asante Kotoko”.

Joe Debrah added that he lost faith in recovering from his injury after a trial with Bundesliga side Dortmund after the managers of the team killed his hope of recovering fully.

“One of the managers recommended me to the club due to my abilities. He proposed they operate on me. But the cost of the operation was very expensive, which the club thought it was going to be a risk as it could turn out good or backfire.”

Joe Debrah is currently in Ghana for some holidays but lives with his family in Germany.
