A 22-year-old man, Jebril Hamidu, has been found dead in an abandoned galamsey pit in Juaboso in the Western North Region after reportedly drowning.

According to police, Jebril’s family reported him missing on May 31, 2025, after he left home around 2:00 am to search for gold but never returned.

A search operation was launched, leading to the discovery of his decomposing body in a grass-covered mining pit.

Beside him lay a gold detector machine, believed to be his.

Police also retrieved a waist bag containing a mobile phone and GH¢250 in cash.

Authorities confirmed that there were no signs of external injuries, and all body parts remained intact.

Residents suspect that heavy rains the previous night caused flooding in the area, which may have led to his accidental fall and drowning.

The body has been transferred to the Juaboso Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy, as investigations continue into the cause of death.
