The fire at Zongo Lane in Accra which razed some commercial shops on Sunday September 1, 2024 destroying thousands of properties has finally been quenched by the Ghana National Fire Service.

The Ghana National Fire Service in a statement on Sunday September 8, 2024, released on its Official Facebook page stated that, despite the numerous challenges, including locked shops and warehouses, smoke, intense heat and collapsing structures, fire fighters confined the blaze and prevented it from further spread.

The statement again said, though properties were destroyed they recorded zero injuries or fatalities, stressing that, building experts will assess the damage for further advice and action.

The GNFS says investigation has been launched with two fire engines stationed on site to address any potential reignition.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully extinguished the massive fire at Zongo Lane, Accra, after a week-long effort.

The fire, which began on September 1, 2024, engulfed shops and warehouses filled with home appliances, mattresses, plastics and leather materials, making it difficult to control.

Despite numerous challenges, including locked shops and warehouses, acrid smoke, intense heat, and collapsing structures, firefighters confined the blaze and prevented it from further spread.

Though 8 shops, 4 warehouses, and 12 residential rooms were destroyed, 3 adjoining buildings and warehouses with their contents were salvaged by the adept firefighters.

Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities occurred. The area has been secured, and building experts will assess the damage and advice on needed and further action.

Two fire engines remain on standby to address any potential reignition. Investigations into the fire’s cause are ongoing, and the GNFS urges the public to prioritize safety to prevent similar incidents.

GNFS thanks all firefighters and supporting agencies who responded for their dedication and support.
