Two SHS students confirmed dead in Bawku with Cerebrospinal Meningitis

Two students have been confirmed dead from suspected Cerebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM) with 11 others on admission at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital in the Upper East region.

The two deceased were said to be second-year science students of the Bawku senior high school (SHS) and the Bawku Senior High Technical School.
Confirming the news to 3FM, the Upper East regional health director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Kofi Isa indicated that massive education is currently being rolled out to create awareness of the disease.
 
He said that twenty cases have so been recorded within the week.
“Yes two students have died from the disease, Cerebrospinal Meningitis, with eleven others on admission at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital. Twenty cases have so far been reported this week at the Bawku Municipal, Pusiga, Binduri and Garu hospitals. We have already started public education for the people to report early when they see symptoms of the disease,” he said.
Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) is an acute inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and the spinal cord. It can sometimes lead to fatal consequences.
Causes include bacterial, viral, parasites and even chemical.
