2024 FUTSAL AFCON: Ghana humbled by Zambia in group opener

Ghana’s Futsal National Team Coach, Philip Boakye, has acknowledged the tough competition faced by his team at the 2024 Futsal AFCON in Morocco, after their early exit from the tournament.

Speaking on Happy Sports with Ohene Bampoe Brenya, Coach Boakye highlighted the experience gap between Ghana and some of the participating teams, stating, “Teams like Morocco, Angola have had more exposure and experience than we did.”

Ghana, placed in Group A alongside Morocco, Zambia, and Angola, unfortunately fell short in all three group matches. Their final match against Angola ended in an 11-3 defeat, marking the end of their AFCON journey.

The Black Stars conceded a total of 24 goals throughout the group stage while managing to score eight.

However, Coach Boakye remains optimistic about the experience gained. “We have learnt a lot from the tournament,” he said.

With a relatively young Futsal league in Ghana, participating in such a high-level competition provides valuable lessons for the sport’s development within the country.

Coach Boakye emphasized, “We are going home to do our homework,” indicating that the coaching staff and players will analyze their performance to prepare for future challenges.

While the results may not have been what the Black Stars had hoped for, the experience gained in Morocco is a significant step forward for Ghana’s Futsal program.

The Atlas Lions of Morocco clinched their third consecutive TotalEnergies CAF Futsal AFCON title following a stunning 5-1 victory over Angola in an entertaining final.

Morocco, Angola, and Libya will represent the continent at the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Uzbekistan later this year.
