Political Analyst, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante says the marginal difference between the majority and minority in Ghana’s next parliament will in no way retard the country’s development.

After the Electoral Commission declared the results of the just ended 2020 general elections, it was observed that the opposition, National Democratic Congress (NDC) won a lot more parliamentary seats and this has raised some concerns.

It has been asserted that the NDC with their high numbers in the 8th parliament will further delay the passage of bills and frustrate the work of the ruling government.

Reacting to this claim in an interview with Samuel Eshun, host of the Happy Morning Show, Dr. Asah-Asante said, “I’ll not worry about the little difference between the majority and minority in the 8th parliament of the 4th republic. Both parties have always worked together and this time around, they’ll still do that. The NDC will make sure parliamentary affairs are smooth”.

He acknowledged there will be a few disagreements in parliament but through consensus building and consultation, the country’s objectives will be achieved.
“Now, parliamentary issues will be more centered on making things work and for the development of the state and nothing else”, he added.

On his accord, the Ghanaian people had a reason for voting along the pattern they did at the just ended parliamentary elections.

“The people expect parliamentarians to work hard. With this in mind, the opposition will work hard as they don’t want to be criticised by the people. The gov’t will also work hard to prevent criticism and the lives of the people will be better” he told Samuel Eshun.

Addressing the fear of regular walk outs by the opposition, Dr. Asah-Asante described the act as a tool used by parliament. He said, “The NDC uses walk outs and the NPP also used it when in opposition. But they all come back and work out their differences. This time around, if the NDC decides to sabotage gov’t by staging regular walk outs, it’ll work against them”.
