The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer at the just ended December 7 elections, John Mahama, says he is ready to accept defeat and acknowledge President Akufo-Addo as President-elect of the 2020 general election based on an independent audit.

According to the former president, he will only do so on the condition that the Electoral Commission (EC) will allow the NDC to take an independent audit of the election results for closure.

Ex-President Mahama disclosed this in an interview on Voice of America, insisting that it is the only way the matter can be laid to rest.

“If an independent audit is done on the EC’s results and the outcome proves that I lost the elections, I will accept it and walk away as I have done in the past.

“But as long as an independent audit is not done and knowing that there was a deliberate attempt to subvert the will of voters by the government and the EC, it will be wrong on my part to let it go,” he said.

On his account, the Commission demonstrated “gross incompetence” in conducting the general election, especially when it came to the collation of the results.

“In my principles as a democrat, I cannot accept the results of a discredited elections. I can’t be seen to be sweeping it under the carpet and let it go,” he noted.

The Electoral Commission last week declared President Akufo-Addo President-elect in the just ended 2020 polls. He managed to poll 6,730, 413 votes amounting to 51.30% of the total votes cast while the NDC’s John Mahama polled 6,213,182 which translates to 47.35% of total votes.

The NDC and its flagbearer after the declaration of the election results claim the election recorded a number of discrepancies, making the results flawed and have decided to contest the election result.
