International Diplomatic Consultant, Farouk Al Wahab says ECOWAS has no first-hand information on the current situation of Guinea after Alpha Conde was deposed on Sunday, September 5, 2021.

West Africa’s main regional bloc has suspended Guinea’s membership, days after a military coup that removed President Alpha Conde.

During an extraordinary virtual summit on Wednesday, leaders from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) demanded a return to the constitutional order and the immediate release of Conde, who was arrested by Special Forces led by Lieutenant Colonel Mamady Doumbouya on Sunday. They also charged the coup plotters to treat Alpha Conde with respect and make sure no harm befalls him.

Addressing the concern of Alpha Conde being harmed, Farouk Al-Wahab insists no one will dare harm the President under the watch of Lieutenant Colonel Mamady Doumbouya.

He indicated that both Alpha Conde and coup leader Mamady Doumbouya are from the Malinké ethnic group “and like I’ve been saying Malinké to Malinké, Fula to Fula, Guineans will never harm each other. They are not violent people. They are tribal people and have a high regard for culture, tradition and their elders.”

According to him, Alpha Conde more or less treated Lieutenant Colonel Mamady Doumbouya as his son and saw to his elite education, eventually making him a colonel of the army at a young age of 33. “Mamady respects Alpha Conde. Alpha Conde elevated the Doumbouya family by picking Mamady who was from a poor family, educating and making him who he is now.”

The Diplomatic Consultant revealed that Lieutenant Colonel Mamady Doumbouya on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, issued explicit instructions protecting the family of Alpha Conde and ministers who were not resisting the military. “Although he has closed land and air borders, he has ordered the military to give these ministers and the president’s family the privacy they deserve and has assigned a 24 hour medical surveillance team to the President.”

Farouk Al-Wahab indicated that ECOWAS has not been able to communicate with either Alpha Conde Lieutenant Colonel Mamady. “ECOWAS I am sorry has no information on Guinea as at now,” he told Don Kwabena Prah on Happy98.9FM’s Epa Hoa Daben political talk show.

With the coup taking place on Sunday, Guineans were unable to go to their workplaces on Monday, but have been moving abut freely without any curfew imposed on them says Farouk Al-Wahab who is a close to the Doumbouya family.

“No one will dare touch Alpha Conde under Lieutenant Colonel Mamady Doumbouya’s watch. He has sworn with his life that it’ll be the gravest mistake for any harm to before Alpha Conde,” he disclosed.

A decade after being sworn into office by judges in vermilion and ermine, President Alpha Condé of Guinea became the prisoner of an elite military unit that stormed the presidential palace in the small hours of 5 September.

A remarkable image framed his fall: soldiers armed with assault rifles posing in front of a Condé in half-unbuttoned shirt and vest, immediately after his capture. As he was driven to an unknown destination, jammed between two soldiers, crowds celebrated in the streets of the capital, Conakry, shouting ‘Liberté! Liberté!’
