E-levy will bring life to Ghanaians – NPP’s Kafui Amegah

Communication Team Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kafui Amegah, has stated that the introduction of the electronic levy (e-levy) will only make life better for Ghanaians.

According to him, Ghana cannot rely on grants to run a nation, and borrowing also increases a nation’s debt.

“Grants are not given for free. When a nation goes to borrow from another, do you know how the country giving out the loan raises revenue? It is through taxes. The NDC has accused us of borrowing excessively to run the nation, we have heard their concerns and will raise revenue internally,” he said.

In a panel discussion on Happy98.9FM’s Epa Hoa Daben political talk show with Don Kwabena Prah, Kafui Amegah, shared his surprise at the NDC opposing the e-levy which would see the country raise revenue internally and reduce debt.

“The NDC is against the construction of good roads, infrastructure and other developmental projects which the Ghanaian is entitled to and it is just wrong,” he noted.

He disclosed the NDC has no alternative to the e-levy, adding that “the e-levy will bring life and we will see it through for the benefit of Ghanaians.”

Kafui Amegah further charged Ghanaians to side with government on the e-levy as he believes citizens would have not complained if their service providers had increased charges on momo transactions.

On 17 November 2021, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta said the Government of Ghana had decided to tax all electronic transactions in the informal sector to cover the tax net.

He made this known in the 2022 budget statement and economic policy that was read in the parliament of Ghana.

1.75% is the rate of the E-levy which the Government decided to apply on all transactions. Ken Ofori-Atta said it could raise about $1.15billion which will widen the tax net.

According to Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah the money generated from the levy would be used for the payments of contractors in Ghana. Also, revenue from the levy would be used to support entrepreneurship, cyber and digital security; road infrastructure and provide jobs to about 11million people in the country.

The Government of Ghana said that the introduction of the levy was due to the rise of the use of digital platforms for transactions because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
