Former Asante Kotoko great, Francis Akwaffo- Boateng affectionately called Totti, has encouraged the involvement of more experienced players in the Ghana Premier League in other to improve the qualify of football in the league.

According to Akwaffo, who is also the president of Great United Footballers Association (GUFA), he believes the GPL no longer has its spark, which makes fans less likely to attend games.

Speaking in an interview on Happy FM’s Where Are They segment, He said,” Experienced and popular players should be involved in our league because they would attract people to the stadium. Looking at players like Asmaoah Gyan who returned to play for Legon Cities in the league, it brought some type of hype and excitement to the game. There’s no one in the league now people would troop in to watch and it’s very sad”.

“ It was after I moved to play in Egypt that I realized football is not about dribbling too much and holding on to the ball for long. Instead, it is just a simple give and take of the ball, it is science..that’s why football in Europe is thriving,” he added.

The former Asante Kotoko player advised the current playing group not to become complacent and instead be eager to learn from former teammates. He urged the players to encourage competition between themselves.

Akwaffo credited coaches like Karim Zito, Herbert Addo and others for a successful stint at Asante Kotoko.

The Suame-born player – who played for two teams in the Premier League (B.A United and Asante Kotoko) was an exciting talent to watch over his 11-years career in the Ghanaian top-flight. He also had stints in Egypt and Libya and with German side FSV Frankfurt.

In 2021, he set up a football Academy, ‘The Francis Akwaffo Academy’ to develop and train young talents in the country.
