The Minority Caucus in Parliament has announced a rescheduled date for their planned protest against Dr. Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, and his deputies. The protest, initially set for an earlier date, will now take place on September 12, 2023.

The decision to change the protest date comes after proceedings in court on September 4, 2023. The court reportedly faced challenges in delivering an instant ruling due to the complex preliminary legal objections raised by the lawyers representing the Minority in Parliament.

Consequently, the court requested more time to consider the matter and plans to announce its decision on Friday, September 8, 2023.

The central issue prompting this demonstration is the demand for the resignation of Governor Ernest Addison and his deputies. This demand has grown louder after the Bank of Ghana reported a staggering GH¢60.81 billion loss in the fiscal year 2022.

The Minority Caucus has been vocal in its criticism, accusing the Central Bank’s leadership of gross mismanagement. They highlight the unprecedented financial loss, negative equity of GHSS5.1 billion, alleged illegal printing of over GHS80 billion, and the construction of a new head office costing over $250 million.

Notably, this construction project has faced scrutiny, as the Public Procurement Authority initially recommended a budget of only $81 million.

In a statement, the Minority Caucus urged Ghanaians to remain steadfast in their commitment to protect their constitutional right to demonstrate. They reassured the public that the protest at the Bank of Ghana headquarters would indeed take place on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.

The rescheduled protest is expected to draw significant attention as Ghanaians continue to voice their concerns about the management of the country’s financial institutions.
