Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has officially launched the implementation of the Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112) starting today, February 1, 2024.
This legislation targets carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from internal combustion engine vehicles, to curb the country’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.
The GRA has emphasised that this initiative is in line with the government’s “steadfast” commitment to addressing environmental concerns and promoting a cleaner, greener future.
The Emissions Levy Act is designed not only to regulate emissions but also to encourage the adoption of eco-friendly technology and green energy, thereby contributing to enhanced environmental management and the reduction of air and water pollution.
To facilitate the implementation of the Emissions Levy Act, the GRA has outlined a streamlined process for affected individuals. Those obligated to pay the levy are required to complete the registration procedure and make their levy payments exclusively through the official ghana.gov platform.
Highlighting the seriousness of compliance, the GRA has cited section 4(4) of Act 1112, stating that entities responsible for issuing road certificates, such as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and other testing centres, will demand evidence of payment of the levy before issuing a Road Use Certificate.
The GRA has issued a public call to all vehicle owners, urging them to adhere to the directives outlined in Act 1112 and fulfill their obligations promptly by making the required Emissions Levy payments.
