Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced thatthe government has successfully removed all ghost names from the national payroll system.

Speaking at the Chief Justice’s forum in Accra, Dr. Bawumia credited the implementation of the Ghana Card system as a key factor in eradicating this longstanding issue.

“We have now eliminated ghost workers at the Controller and Accountant General’s office just by using the Ghana Card because the ghosts don’t have fingerprints,” he stated.

“This has saved SSNIT four hundred and eighty million Ghana cedis by eliminating twenty-nine thousand ghost pensioners, and at the National Service (Secretariat) by eliminating forty-four thousand workers, we have saved over three hundred and fifty-six million Ghana cedis.”

The Vice President’s announcement comes on the heels of a similar declaration made by the Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem, at the 2024 CAGD Annual Conference in Kumasi.

Kwaning-Bosompem emphasized that the payroll database has undergone rigorous scrutiny to ensure its credibility and eliminate any unauthorized individuals from benefiting from government resources.

Dr. Bawumia touted the role of digitalization in combating corruption, stating, “I have also seen through digitalisation that you can deal with corruption.”

He further urged all stakeholders in the justice delivery value chain to support the Chief Justice’s vision and goals, emphasizing the government’s commitment to continuous improvement.
