Eastern Sudan has suffered a catastrophic disaster as surging waters from a burst dam destroyed more than 20 villages, resulting in the deaths of at least 30 people.

According to credible news sources, the tragedy was triggered by torrential rains that caused severe flooding, ultimately overwhelming the Abraat Dam, located north of Port Sudan. Port Sudan serves as the de facto national capital and is a critical hub for the government, diplomats, aid agencies, and hundreds of thousands of displaced people.

Omar Eissa Haroun, Head of the Water Authority for Red Sea State, described the affected area as “unrecognizable,” noting that all access to water and electricity has been destroyed.

Authorities have launched search parties to locate those displaced by the disaster.

The United Nations has highlighted that Eastern Sudan, already devastated by months of civil war, now faces the additional challenge of dealing with the aftermath of the dam’s collapse.
