The government has officially revoked the mining lease of FGR Bogoso Prestea Mining Limited, following recommendations from the Minerals Commission and the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice.

This was announced in a statement issued by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

This move follows protests and concerns from various groups, including the Ghana Mine Workers Union. More than 400 union members had picketed the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, calling for the termination of the company’s leases.

They highlighted poor working conditions and the company’s failure to resolve critical operational challenges, including meeting its debt obligations.

Samuel Abu Jinapor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the efficient, transparent, and sustainable management of the country’s natural resources for the benefit of all Ghanaians, with a focus on integrity and good faith.

FGR was cautioned in August 2023 regarding several breaches in its mining operations and was advised by the Minerals Commission to address them. However, after reviewing reports from the Minerals Commission and a Ministerial Committee tasked with evaluating the company’s activities, the decision to terminate the leases was made. The government also engaged extensively with all stakeholders involved.
