The Board Chairman of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has dismissed calls for the dissolution of the board as inappropriate.
These calls were prompted by the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), which highlighted alleged mismanagement and substantial financial losses at ECG, with revenue losses reportedly increasing from GH¢295 million in 2017 to GH¢9.7 billion in 2022.
He addressed this issue during the appointment of David Asamoah as acting Managing Director of ECG. He argued that the focus should be on stakeholder engagement rather than dissolving the board.
He emphasized the need for internal reforms and collaboration with all stakeholders, stating that ECG could improve its efficiency through such reforms.
He also reassured the public that the recent resignation of Samuel Dubik Mahama as the Managing Director would not lead to power supply disruptions. The company’s management and systems remain in place, and ECG will continue to provide essential services across the country.
