Cynthia Morrison’s independent candidacy bid in limbo as court places injunction on her

The District Magistrate Court in Agona Swedru has placed an injunction on Cynthia Mamle Morrison’s bid to contest the Agona West parliamentary seat as an independent candidate.

The court has ordered her to refrain from participating in any activities related to the nomination process for the 2024 general elections.

This ruling casts uncertainty over Cynthia Morrison’s political future, especially with elections drawing near. Madam Morrison, who won the Agona West seat on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ticket in both 2016 and 2020, decided to run independently after losing the party’s primary in April 2024. She secured 152 votes in the contest, losing to Christopher Arthur, who polled 240 votes.

The former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection attributed her independent run to a lack of fairness in the party’s internal processes, alleging that favoritism and a lack of transparency undermined her chances.

She has openly criticized the NPP leadership, accusing them of marginalizing her despite her track record and contributions to the party and the constituency.

The court injunction introduces fresh challenges for her independent campaign, stirring tensions within the constituency as residents and political observers await further developments ahead of the December elections.
