Finance Minister’s absence delays mini-budget presentation for second day

The Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, was once again absent from Parliament today, failing to present the anticipated mini-budget.

This marks the second consecutive day of delay since the house was recalled yesterday for the presentation.

The absence of Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and other key members of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) front bench, fueled further speculation surrounding the delay.

In response, the acting Majority Leader, the Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi informed the House that the NPP leadership had no information regarding the Finance Minister’s whereabouts or the cause of the delay.

This explanation, however, failed to ease the concerns of the Minority, who accused the government of deliberately avoiding the presentation.

Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Kwame Agbodza argued that the delay could be a calculated move by the NPP to frustrate a potential new government following the 2024 elections.

He warned of serious consequences if the delay continues, particularly regarding the potential impact on public sector workers’ salaries. He stressed that should there be delays in wage payments, the NPP government must assume full responsibility.

The mini-budget amount remains listed on the order paper, but with two days passing and no presentation made, the situation remains unresolved. Minority MPs have pledged to continue pushing for accountability, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the matter.
