The Coalition of Muslim Organizations (COMO) has expressed strong support for a lawsuit filed against Wesley Girls Senior High School, accusing the institution of systematic religious discrimination against Muslim students. COMOG has called on the public to condemn the alleged acts, which it considers unlawful and a violation of the constitutional rights of students.

The lawsuit, filed by private legal practitioner Shafik Usman, has been described as a landmark case. It accuses the school, the Ghana Education Service (GES), and the Attorney General of infringing on the rights of Muslim students by enforcing policies that restrict their ability to practice their faith. The case was filed at the Supreme Court under the original jurisdiction of the court as provided for in Articles 2(1)(b) and 131(a) of the 1992 Constitution.

Mohammed Shamsudeen Shaibu, the spokesperson for COMOG, asserts that Wesley Girls High School should give up government funding if it intends to uphold its faith-based identity.

The legal action claims that the school’s policies compel Muslim students to conform to Methodist practices, thereby undermining their freedom of religion. Usman argues that these actions contravene constitutional guarantees of religious freedom and equality.

He advocated for an inclusive environment within the education sector, emphasizing the importance of upholding constitutional rights and fostering mutual respect among students of diverse religious backgrounds
