Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has disclosed that he was at Yemen’s Sana’a airport during an Israeli airstrike targeting the area.

The Sanaa airport, one of the nation’s busiest hubs, was attacked as part of strikes linked to Israel’s efforts to target Houthi rebels in Yemen. The Israeli military stated that it hit several key targets, including three ports along Yemen’s western coast—Hodeidah, Salif, and Ras Kanatib—as well as Hezyaz and Ras Kanatib power stations.

“As we were about to board our flight from Sana’a, about two hours ago, the airport came under aerial bombardment,” said Dr. Tedros, recounting the deadly experience.

Reports confirm that, apart from one of his plane’s crew members being injured, his team is safe. However, the airport sustained damage, delaying their departure. Tragically, two people at the airport lost their lives.

“My UN and WHO colleagues and I are safe; our heartfelt condolences to the families whose loved ones lost their lives in the attack,” Dr. Tedros expressed in a statement issued after the incident.
