Trump set to face New York court sentencing in felony conviction

President-elect Donald Trump, following months of legal proceedings, is scheduled to appear for sentencing in a Manhattan court on Friday, January 10, 2025.

The case will be presided over by Judge Juan Merchan, who is expected to bring Trump’s financial-related felony conviction to a conclusion. Judge Merchan, during a recent hearing, stated that he does not intend to impose jail time and is likely to issue an unconditional discharge. However, the conviction will remain on Trump’s record as required by law.

This hearing takes place just 10 days before Trump’s inauguration as the 47th President of the United States.

Reports suggest that Trump has expressed concerns about the potential impact of the conviction on his presidency. After the Supreme Court dismissed efforts to overturn the conviction, Trump hinted at exploring further legal options to challenge the verdict.

Addressing the media from his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida on Thursday after a Supreme Court ruling, introduced the possibility of further appeals, such as an attempt to appeal the verdict itself.

Prosecutors, per reports, have indicated the sentencing hearing will likely be brief, lasting less than an hour. Trump is expected to attend virtually.

Director of the criminal defense clinic at New York Law School, Anna Cominsky explained the implications of an unconditional discharge. “There’s nothing else the defendant has to do, and therefore it’s the least restrictive option. It shouldn’t interfere with the president-elect’s ability to assume office,” she said.
