The Western Regional Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Richard Mensah, has refuted claims that members of the NDC in the Western Region vandalized the statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Effia Nkwanta roundabout.

On Monday, January 13, 2024, it was reported that the statue, located at the Effia Nkwanta roundabout in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis, had been torn down by unknown individuals.

Mr. Mensah condemned accusations by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which alleged that NDC members were behind the act, citing a supposed threat to vandalize the statue after President John Dramani Mahama’s inauguration. He insisted that the NDC, as a political party, had no involvement in the incident.

He further alleged that the act may have been orchestrated by members of the NPP themselves to tarnish the image of their Member of Parliament, Blay Nyameke Armah. According to Mensah, the MP had previously suggested relocating the statue to Nana Addo’s hometown, which could have sparked internal tensions within the NPP.

Mensah also highlighted that during the NDC’s victory walk in Sekondi, participants passed by the statue without incident, questioning why they would destroy it afterward. He called on the Ghana Police Service to investigate the matter and hold the perpetrators accountable, noting the presence of CCTV cameras at the location.
