Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to fulfill his campaign promise by signing the controversial Anti-Gay Bill into law.

This appeal comes in response to President Mahama’s recent suggestion that a government-sponsored bill would be more effective than the current Private Member’s Bill. The President argued that such an approach would allow for broader consultations and foster national consensus.

During a meeting with the Bishops on Tuesday, January 14, President Mahama stressed the importance of revising school curriculums to incorporate moral and cultural teachings that reflect Ghanaian and African values.

However, in a Facebook post on Thursday, January 16, Mr. Ahiagbah criticized the President for allegedly reneging on his campaign pledge to sign the LGBTQ+ Bill, a promise made during the 2024 general election. He urged the President to approve the bill in its current form without delay, warning that political promises carry electoral consequences.

“H.E. John Mahama is running away from signing the LGBTQ+ Bill after promising to do so in its current form. Elections have consequences, and H.E. Mahama must not shift the goalpost. Sign the bill as you have pledged to Ghanaians…
