The Minority in Parliament has opposed president John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiama as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

According to a statement read by Dr. Gideon Boako, the Member of Parliament for Tano North on behalf of the Minority, Ghana will stand to suffer huge global reputational risk if Dr. Johnson Asiama is approved as Governor of the Central Bank.

He stated that Dr. Johnson Asiama is currently standing trial and will be in the interest of the State and all parties for the appointment to be delayed until the case against the nominee has been finalized.

“It is in the interest of both the State, the government and Dr. Asiama himself for the case to establish whether or not he is guilty of the crimes he has been charged with. For a party that claims to love accountability, we will urge president Mahama to let the case against Dr. Asiama continue.”

The Minority added that a potential criminal convict like Dr. Johnson Asiama cannot serve as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

“The actions by the president gives our course to believe that Dr. Asiama is not clean. This attempt to discontinue the proceeding of the criminal charges against Dr. Asiamah is the reason why we think that a potential criminal convict like Dr. Asiama should not be heading a sensitive and important office as the Governor of the Central Bank.”
