President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that his firm slash down on ministerial positions from eighty three to sixty will pave way for further reductions as government makes efforts to cut down on expenditure.

President John Mahama in 2024, during his campaign, shared that his administration will streamline government agencies by merging ministries and eliminating those that duplicate functions, ensuring a more efficient and cost-effective government.

The President, while delivering his first address on the State of the Nation , on Thursday, February 27, 2025 in parliament, noted that his decision to cut down the number of ministerial positions that cuts across ministers, deputy minsters and regional ministers was influenced by the sorrowful sentiments of Ghanaians regarding ministries that did not bring about substantial solutions despite their existence.

The slash down, he shared will be replicated in future governments across all public service statutory in Ghana. “I trust that this significant reduction to sixty ministers and deputy ministers, including regional ministers, will set the stage for further reductions in the size of future governments. With the inauguration of the council of state, we can begin appointing the staff of the presidency. I intend to significantly reduce the number of staff compared to what existed under previous administrations . All this is aimed at leading by example in cutting down government expenditure and reducing the budget deficit.” Mahama intimated.
